One of the biggest highlights of my weekend was the Grayson Highland ponies. Based on my research, the ponies were originally released into the park in the 1970s. The reason for releasing them was to control vegetation growth on the bald sections of trail. The ponies are considered wild but they did not seem to be that frightened of people.
If you go visit the ponies, please respect their space. They can get spooked and may injure you or themselves in response. Ponies have very strong kicks and can bite hard. Do not feed them as human food can make them sick. This could also get them too comfortable around people, which can put them at risk as well.
As I stated in a prior post, we saw 12 ponies (including 2 foals). Enjoy the photos!
